History

The department was started in 1988 when Con Mech Engineers set up its new wear blade manufacturing site in the North East. Initially one hardening furnace was built along with a water quench. Great emphasis was put on the water quench process in order to achieve the full potential of the boron steel used in the manufacture of its blades.

A second tempering furnace was quickly built to temper the Con Mech blade product in the range 200c to 300c. Once the Heat Treatment of the Con mech product had been successfully established then the sub contact side of the business was developed and success in this sector quickly led to commissioning of more furnaces along with the installation of a polymer quench facility.

A total of 6 furnaces completed the department in 2004. To further enhance the department a shotblast facility was installed in 2002. The department supplies heat treatment services to the Oil & Gas industry along with the mining, power generation defence and railway sectors. Continuing success and demand in these areas then led to the opening of the second heat treatment department in 2007. This new department housing furnaces 6.5m long is to be developed over the next 3 years to contain a total of 4 furnaces and a water quench tank to suit.

The department now has a strong and stable management team supported by a quality and inspection department and employs a total of 20 direct workers covering a 3 shift pattern.
